Why is there sometimes fog on the outside glass in the morning?

[All Tips]

Exterior condensation on the insulating glass is a phenomenon that occurs on high performance windows.

External condensation is usually noted under the following conditions:

  • High relative humidity (eg. outside temperature are near dew point)
  • High efficiency glass, such as Super HP®
  • Early in the morning
  • Direct exposure to a clear sky north, east or south
  • No wind

If the surrounding temperature is slightly above the dew point and the temperature of the glass is slightly below, condensation will form on the glass surface.

The advent of high-performance energy systems, preventing the inner heat from escaping to the outer surface, causes this phenomenon. Because the conditions mentioned above rarely occur in combination, it is not common to observe this phenomenon even on insulating glass with high energy efficiency.

But rest assured, it is usually a sign that a superior windowing system has been installed.
