Signed Jacinthe – 5 things to know before enlarging your windows

[All Tips]

We all dream of brighter interiors filled with natural light. Enlarging your windows may seem like the ideal solution but hold on, before breaking out the saw and plans, there are several important factors to consider. Here are some expert tips on maximizing natural light without necessarily taking on major renovations.

1. Keep it simple for a bigger effect

Before even thinking about enlarging your openings, start by simplifying your windows.

Choosing models without sashes or muntins helps open up the view and creates the illusion of larger windows. The result: a more airy, brighter space and a softer ambiance, perfect for the kitchen, especially above the sink! Another tip: if you’re lacking light between two rooms, consider partially opening a wall. A horizontal opening at the top of the wall or even a vertical slit can help natural light flow from one room to another without major construction. Before moving forward, ask yourself the essential question: is the view I’ll create by enlarging the window really worth it?

2. Not every window can be enlarged

The reality is not all windows can be enlarged. Before planning anything, take the time to check local regulations.

Some cities have strict limits on window openings, especially regarding proximity to neighboring properties. Next, consult qualified professionals; architects, contractors, or structural engineers, to determine if your home’s structure can safely accommodate a larger window.

3. Think about openings from the start of your renovation

The best time to consider window openings is at the very beginning of your project.

Don’t wait until you’ve finalized your kitchen or bathroom plans to think: “I should have enlarged the window above the sink!” During the preliminary planning stage, assess the feasibility and impact of enlarging openings. This will save you regrets (and extra costs later).

4. Enlarge wisely: up or down

Good news: there’s a simpler and often less expensive way to enlarge windows.

Instead of widening the opening left to right, consider stretching it upward or downward. This approach avoids touching load-bearing structures, making the work more affordable and less complex.

5. Prioritize natural light before size

Before enlarging, ask yourself if you can optimize natural light in other ways first: choose clearer glazing, reconsider the room’s layout, or even adjust wall and furniture colors. Sometimes, small design choices can have a big impact without altering the structure.

In summary

Before thinking “bigger,” think “simpler”: simplify your windows, encourage natural light flow, and plan modifications early in the process. And above all, rely on professionals. The natural brightness of your dream space deserves to be brought in the right way!
