When the winter is freezing, it is not surprising to receive quite expensive Hydro-Québec bills. As you know, governments are concerned about reducing energy costs.

Since January 1st 2020, Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) has tightened the requirements of the ENERGY STAR^® program, with a new version of the criteria, i.e., Version 5.0. The major change being the removal of climate zones in Canada.

For the certification of windows and doors, Canada was previously divided into 3 climate zones (1, 2 and 3). There is now only one zone area for all of Canada. From now on, the requirements of the former Zone 3 are found everywhere!

The energy efficiency requirements are: Residential windows and doors must meet or exceed a maximum U factor of 1.22 W/m2∙K or a minimum ER of 34.

How to choose your ENERGY STAR^® products?

To make the best energy choice, rely on the ER Index. Over it, the higher the window or door’s performance. The energy efficiency rating (ER) compares all types of fenestration products, regardless of their materials and characteristics.

In addition to offering a higher energy rating (ER), several triple-glazing models reduce noise coming from the outside.

What about “LOW-E” glass?

First, LOW-E glass, or energy efficient glass, is coated by a thin transparent metal film microscopically applied to the inner surface of glass, which, combined with the argon gas inserted between the glasses, greatly increases the performance of an insulated glass.

All ENERGY STAR^® certified products are automatically LOW-E, but not all LOW-E products are ENERGY STAR^®. The difference lies in the possible alteration of the effectiveness of a LOW-E glass depending on the options chosen. For example, the addition of grilles or fake mullions reduces the ER factor.
